SYDCAE Art on Tour 2018: Bloomington, Indiana, USA

Artwork from previous SYDCAEs has been on display at an Art Show at Jill’s House, and shown at the Dementia Friendly Bloomington Workshop in Indiana, USA.

Many thanks to Jan Bays, Program Development and Education at Jill’s House and to John Wood.

It’s great to see creative art from persons affected by dementia in South Yorkshire stimulating thinking across the Atlantic once again.

Spoken Word Event 2018@SYDCAE

So, today we had our Spoken Word event in the Cathedral. And it was fantastic!

The audio version of this will be available on this webpage once we have sorted out the technology.

Many thanks to Helen Smith (see above) from Mapplewell Manor. Thanks also to Barnsley Alzheimer’s Society and the volunteers who came and stood in admirably for our long term supporter and friend Diane Hinchliffe.

And it was great to hear from Anne Ashmore, a long-term contributor of poems to the South Yorkshire Dementia Creative Arts Exhibition.

We welcomed persons from care homes and persons living in the community to attend and read out their poems in the intimate setting of the Shrewsbury Chapel.

This is the 4th year we have done this and next year we have already decided that we must generate a bigger audience. Please get in touch if you would like to help do that with us.

Dementia Futures 2018 #DementiaFutures July 3rd 2018

Thanks to everyone who came today to support Dementia Futures 2018. In particular, well done to the 12 University of Sheffield students whose work on dementia was presented so fluently and accessibly.

Our grateful thanks also to Sandra Barker, an Alzheimer’s Society Research Network Volunteer, who gave the invited plenary session on the role and significance of Research Network Volunteers.

SYDCAE 2018 Poster by Gabrielle Sisler – Celebration of Life

SYDCAE2018finalposter-optimised (2)

My name is Gabrielle Sisler, I am currently majoring in graphic design at Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan. I also do freelance graphic and poster design, and most recently received an award for my Michigan LAND illustration cover. Eventually I will pursue a career in illustration fully. When working on the poster for SYDCAE, I was looking to achieve an overall optimism through harmonious design. I chose symbols that reflected renewal and structured them in a symmetrical and calming visual. In my spare time I enjoy figure drawing and spend a lot of my spare time rooting my 7 year old on at his hockey games! (March 2018)

2018 Exhibition Theme: Celebration of Life

The exhibition and associated events will run between 2-8 July 2018 at Sheffield Cathedral.

The 2018 Theme is: Celebration of Life
Anyone affected by dementia is invited to prepare and submit original creative artwork to this international exhibition: people with dementia, family supporters and friends and paid and volunteer practitioners are all invited to take part.
We have a sister exhibition in Michigan which plans to host it’s 3rd annual event at Detroit Institute of Arts – and images of work from South Yorkshire contributors will be included in this event, too.
Contact me for further information about submission arrangements.
